HVEM has two advantages, the increased voltage shortens the wavelength of the electrons (and therefore increases resolving power) but, more importantly for the biologist, the penetrating power of the beam is increased, and it becomes possible to look at thicker specimens. Thus it is possible, by using stereoscopic views (obtained with a tilting stage) to get a three-dimensional picture of the interior of a cell.
